For more than a decade, violinist Daphne Oltheten and pianist Henrique Gomide have managed to enchant audiences in Europe and Brazil with their Brazilian instrumental chamber music (Choro) that crosses genres by combining elements of classical music and jazz.
In BRASIS, the duo takes listeners on a journey through little-explored corners of the country, including the music of Bahian troubadour Elomar and opera composer Carlos Gomes. From Moacir Santos, Baden, Yamandu, Guinga, Gismonti and others, the duo has gathered a selection of rarely played Brazilian musical gems.
With percussive piano playing, classical violin and ingenious arrangements, the duo interprets northeastern rhythms such as forró, baião, maracatu and frevo with great musicality, as audiences have seen at the Festival de Inverno Campos do Jordão (2023) and the Amsterdam Hall of the Concertgebouw (Netherlands), among others.
In October, the duo Brasis will release their new album, debuting under Dutch label Challenge Records. The album features collaborations with trompetist Matthias Schriefl, singer Anna Serierse and percussionist Antoine Duijkers, further exploring the depths of the Brazilian repertoire.
